GYRO — WHAT IS IT?
Gyro came into being naturally and spontaneously .
. . as the result of the desire of three college
chums to perpetuate the friendships of college
days. It was April 1912 that the three friends
—-------
Paul Schwan, Clarence H. Handerson and Edmund L.
Kagy

meeting together as had been their custom, decided
that the unity of their friendship, which had
crystallized through four years of college
association in Cleveland, was worthy of
perpetuation. Not only of perpetuation, but to
bring into this unity other friends whose joining
together would strengthen them against the
diversified demands of business and other
interests, that all too often sever old friendships
so completely that the old youthful friendly,
heart-to-heart, and hand-to-hand contact cannot be
retained. These three Gyro founders felt that
nothing could be more satisfying than a friendship
extending throughout life with the very real warmth
and affection that usually characterizes the
friendships of younger days. "Age has no terrors
when the friendships of youth extend into the
constantly advancing years with undiminished
fervor."
Organized
June 24 with constitution and laws, the name
Gyro
was selected in
December 1912,
an adaptation from the word Gyroscope. The
Gyroscope
is the visible symbol of Gyro.
In a Gyroscope wheel, both ends of its axis are
mounted in a ring. When in rapid rotation, no
matter at what angle the axis is placed, the
Gyroscope will continue to point in the same
direction, maintaining its poise and power. This
balance is retained even though the axis is moved
by some outside force while the Gyroscope is
already in motion.
The Gyroscopic principle is controlled power, poise
and balance. From this principle, come the Gyro key
words of:
POWER — POISE — PURPOSE
POWER
— Symbolizing the power of friendship in our human
relationships.
POISE
— Demonstrating the steadiness of friendship in
times of trial.
PURPOSE
— Keeping the balance wheel of
friendship
forever active in the daily lives of more
men.
Truro Hosts District Convention 2009
“The District VI Convention was a huge success with approximately 100 people in attendance. I would like to thank everyone in the Truro Club who helped make it the success that it was. A financial report will be given at the next meeting”.
If you missed the convention, you missed a great event! Golfing on Friday was a fun event, according to the ‘golfers’ with lots of prizes given out at Saturday’s luncheon. Friday night was entertainment night and what blast it was! Our entertainer for the evening was Steve Butler and he had everyone up dancing, had us singing, and playing in bands (way to go, Ken!). The chowder and chili was delicious too. While the men were in meetings on Saturday morning, the ladies enjoyed the Tea Party that the host club offered. Many creative hats added to the fun as well as an appearance from ‘The Red Rose Baggers’. The Buffet Luncheon at noon was an opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy the presentation by our guest speaker, Brent McGrath, proud owner of ‘Somebeachsomewhere’, a world champion racehorse. A tour of St. John’s Anglican Church was available in the afternoon for those interested. The Reception and Governor’s Banquet was held on Saturday evening with Piper Terry White leading the procession of Past Governor’s and Gyrettes. He then piped in the Head Table and guests. A welcome to all was offered by Les Smith. Presentations of Awards included the Travel Gavel Award presented to the Truro Club and accepted by President Don. The Bulletin Editor award went to Truro as well. Installation of District Officers was conducted by 1st Vice President Harold Bernard. The evening concluded with music by Barry Ryan and Dale Grace. A buffet breakfast on Sunday morning sent our guests on their way. A huge Thank You to Les and all those who made the District VI Convention such a great success!

September 13th was a damp day and at times, down right wet, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of thirty seven Gyros and Gyrettes as they enjoyed the popular ‘Thank You’ to all the Corn Booth workers. Ferne and Fred Barton again offered us a warm welcome to their beautiful home on Grand Lake (just around the ‘corner’ from Sidney!). The Roaches and Stuarts co hosted. “Almost” new members, Dave and Liz Hicks were guests of the Stuarts. We were pleased to have a surprise visit from former members, Peter and Carol Hynes.
